![]() ![]() ![]() Seriously, stop trying to act smart while being uninformed. What do you expect? "BUT GOG HAS INSTALLERS" you may say.well, if you install a DRM-Free game on Steam once and copy its files and dependencies out into a separate folder, then that's pretty much the same thing for DRM-Free games on Steam that's able to be used in other places. There are several games that has achievements but no DRM, for example.Īlso, "Steam is DRM because it manages the distribution of games."? Yeah, because GOG and others didn't do that either.they're all STORES. Steam DRM is just a component of the Steamworks API, which includes several other functions like achievements and leaderboards.which could be implemented along with those features.or not. This is an incomplete list.Īlso, just because there's steam_api.dll / steam_api64.dll in your game folder DOES NOT mean Steam DRM is in place. There are MANY games on Steam that can run WITHOUT Steam. It probably goes a lot further than that but you get my point :P. Unless of course you modify the game's executable :). exe can't be opened without "steam_api64.dll" in the same folder. Games are programmed into Steam in that regard. If you would have Steam installed and got the files from a friend for example the game won't start either. It also has protection in place (think of the fact when you launch a game without Steam running it will try to start up Steam) and if you would copy the files over to a PC that doesn't have Steam installed the game simply won't start. Steam is DRM because it manages the distribution of games. The lack of a local installer is a restriction on your right to install the game making even DRM-Free Steam games at least a little DRMed. Even Steam, without the optional DRM, is technically still a form of DRM. ![]()
